This is a good book to read in the car to help pass the time. I found it interesting enough to read it in the car, but I didn’t have to spend too much time thinking about it.

by Pagen Kennedy

book cover

This book is a deep dive into the history of laws pertaining to rape and how the rape kit was developed. It was shocking to learn how little the American justice system did for sexual assault victims prior to the kit. But what’s more disturbing was to learn how only in recent years laws have been passed to protect, give dignity to, and find justice for these women. The hero of this story is Marty Goddard and her tireless efforts to advocate for assault victims. Even though Marty worked tirelessly to make the rape kit what it is today, she's not known for her creation.

I don't remember much from my schools US History classes, but this was a great dive into the first years of Revolution in the US. I remember myself constantly thinking- how, just how did we make it through this? There were obstacles and short-comings (men and equipment alike) that could've prevented GW & his troops from ultimately winning; and, there were many losses along the road to independence. This book definitely inspired feelings of patriotism and a gratitude for those who came before.

Explores the psychology behind violent crime, using real cases to analyze the motivations of arsonists, bombers, serial killers, and mass murderers, including figures like Ted Kaczynski and Timothy McVeigh, to help understand and predict criminal behavior. I loved the Netflix show MindHunter, so I was excited to read this and learn more about the people and events that inspired the show.

Wow! This word followed me the whole way through the book. With its absolutely stunning art work and its excellent recreation of the original book, it has certainly earned five stars. Though the book is written in an unfamiliar style, manga, I definitely enjoyed reading and gazing upon the gorgeous artwork. The illustrator did an incredible job developing the appearances of the characters in their different time frame. Also the background practically captures the amazing surroundings of Elizabeth Bennet’s world. I would love nothing more but to praise the author and artist of this wonderful manga book for recreating something that is so much more than stunning, absolutely remarkable!

Shadow and Bone
by Leigh Bardugo

Shadow and Bone is one of my favorites, if not my favorite, reads ever. The world was just so magical and fun. The romance was cute and entertaining. While I expected the plot twist, it was still jarring. I went from being wary of the 'villain' to loving him, to hating him at the end. Same with the love interest. Leigh Bardugo is a very talented writer and I admire her skills in writing. I highly suggest giving Shadow and Bone a try, even if you're not into fantasy. (I wasn't all that much until now.)
